Microfriction Apparatus

Microfriction Apparatus in HTML Machining, Inspection, and Tribology User CenterThis unique, ORNL-designed, precision micro-friction tester is fully computer-controlled and situated on an air vibration isolator system. It was designed to conduct fundamental research on small-scale sliding friction phenomena in which the influences of individual microstructural features may be detected. While it typically uses a tiny sphere as the slider,  the friction microprobe has also been used for testing the scratch resistance of thin layers using a diamond tip and normal loads of only a few grams.
