High-speed IR camera was used in detection of hidden corrosion in aging aircraft

  • Pulse heating was applied to the front surface
  • The IR camera recorded temperature changes of the surface
  • Digital image processing showed several corrosion affected areas
  • The bright areas matched corrosion conditions in the back

Panel: Engine Cowling from KC-135
Corrosion: Pitting, loss of material and exfoliation
